Next time you’re driving down a backroad and see something intriguing, stop and enjoy it. Take a moment to soak in the beauty, get out and smell the roses or wild sweet peas in this instance. We don’t mind if you pause and breathe deep. You’re in the country where we enjoy a slower pace.

A colony of Wild Sweet William is a true find. It’s common to find them scattered here and there in woodlands and roadsides, but large groups are more unusual. I found these in an area protected by the Nature Conservancy at Springfield (MO) Conservation Nature Center. At the city’s southeast edge, the Center spreads over an 80-acre tract bordering Lake Springfield. You can find ducks, otters, deer, foxes, and other wildlife, as well as native plants, trees and aquatic plants.
